Kundalini Breathing Exercises for Energy & Vitality

Kundalini yoga is absolutely transformative for your mental health! Harnessing sun energy through your breath can make you energetic, expressive, enthusiastic and extroverted.

Starting your day with these exercises can be a game changer to put you in the right mood if you want to get up and go, or they are especially good for when you are feeling down, drained and like you have no energy.

Here’s how:

1. Alternate Nostril Breathing / nadi shodhana pranayama

Take Nasagra Mudra (hand position shown in video) Exhale completely and then use right thumb to close right nostril. Inhale through left nostril and then close left nostril with your ring finger. Open right nostril and exhale through this side. Inhale through right nostril and then close this nostril. Open left nostril and exhale through left side. Repeat!

2. Sit on your heels with your arms above your head, interlace fingers except the index fingers which point up. Inhale and reach upwards whilst enaging your root lock (think about squeezing your core/pelvic floor). Exhale to relax. Repeat!

3. Sit in easy pose (like cross legged but don’t tuck your legs in). Place your hands on your ankles. Breathe in, reach your heart chakra forwards. Exhale to push back so that you have an arched back, shoulders hunched. Repeat!

4. Come into a squat on the balls of your feet. Hands on the floor. Inhale to push your tailbone to the sky, straighten your legs and relax your head down. Exhale to come back into the squat. Repeat!

5. Place hands in Anjali Mudra or prayer. Turn your head to the left and inhale. Turn your head to the right and exhale. Repeat!

6. Sit in easy pose. Place your hands on your shoulders with your thumb on the back, fingers on the front. Your elbows are up and to the side. Inhale and lean over to the left as you inhale. Exhale to lean to the right. Repeat!

7. Always finish with a meditation to reflect on how you feel and ground yourself before you jump out of this yoga practice…kundalini breathing can give you a real high and can make you feel dizzy when you first start!
